Harrison Elementary Update

Posted on: May 23, 2024
Update

It’s hard to believe that today is the end of another school year. On behalf of the staff at Harrison Elementary School – Thank YOU for a GREAT Year!!! Have a safe summer and we will see everyone back in August.

Don’t forget the PTO Skatin Place Party taking place TONIGHT (May 23rd) from 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm. $22 per person which includes unlimited skating rental, laser tag, bumper cars, clip-in-climb ropes course OR $10 per skater which includes skating and skate rental.  Special Offer at Concessions: $5 for two slices of pizza and a medium drink.

A huge thanks to the Harrison PTO for their financial support sponsoring the 5th Grade Celebration. A special thanks goes out to Phoeba Kellough for her countless hours of planning and organizing the event along with all of her parents volunteers.

As we enter summer break, please remember to pay your child’s school fees. Those students whose fees are not paid by the end of the school year will not have their names posted on class lists in August. Reminders have gone home (most recently last week). If you have any questions, please call the school office.

If you still would like to purchase a yearbook for your child there are still about 5 yearbooks left and will be sold for $15.00 – first come, first sold. Please feel free to come to the office or send your child to school with the money.

You can now follow us on Twitter and Facebook. Please make sure you are members of the correct sites. There were several “unofficial” sites created and we are trying to inactivate them. I have been posting a lot of pictures of events happening at Harrison Elementary. Feel free to send them out to family and friends. This is a great way to keep up on events at school.

Did You Know…..

Last week, we continued our five-part video series about how school finance works at SLSD. In the first video, we discussed the history of past levies here at Southwest, and how SLSD utilizes your tax dollars to ensure a quality education and opportunities for every student.

If you missed last week’s video or the previous parts in our school finance series, you can view them by clicking below:

Video #1: https://youtu.be/mqSFIBqDlQk

Video #2: https://youtu.be/lmvZesPZXg8

Video #3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09e34jbZe4s

This week, our finance series continues with a focus on how enrollment and inflation impact expenditures at SLSD.

You can watch this new video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cv6yywXOwaA

The big takeaway is that, as enrollment increases at SLSD, the amount of money being spent also increases. Ensuring that every student gets the the education they deserve in every building is critical, and spending increases as enrollment increases. Additionally, economic inflation plays a role in how much the district spends. As costs for services, maintenance and more increase, so do the budgets associated with those expenditures.

We continue to provide the information that we’ve been hearing the community ask for throughout our efforts to engage more directly with residents, parents, and students.

Stay tuned for Part 5 of our series, which will provide more information on how new residential developments impact school finance.

World’s Finest Chocolates

We have roughly 8 boxes of chocolates still available to sell. To make some money on the remaining boxes we are going to sell them for $35 each versus the normal $60. There are only a few almonds boxes with the remaining boxes mixed. If you are interested in purchasing one of the remining boxes for $35 please call or stop by the office. Money is needed at the time you pick up the chocolates and are sales are final.

Food Services

Southwest Schools prides itself on offering the lowest school lunch prices in the area, while still covering all operational costs associated with our food service program.  With that in mind, we do not anticipate raising prices for the 2024-25 school year.  As a reminder, if you feel like your family may be eligible for free or reduced lunch prices based on your household income, then you should apply online via the “Food Service” tab of the district website (www.southwestschools.org).  Applications for the 2024-25 school year will be open in early- to mid-July.  Acceptance into the free or reduced lunch program could also provide other benefits that may include academic fee waivers, holiday church help, or summer EBT program benefits.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Sue Toelke or Adam Lohbeck at (513) 367-4139.
